How to Make Brown Sugar Cookies

There aren't many people who don't enjoy eating cookies once in a while. Cookies can be baked or unbaked and come in many different flavors, one being brown sugar. These sugar cookies aren't only delicious, they are quick and simple to bake too. The brown sugar adds a distinct flavor and color to this sweet cookie. Bake a dozen brown sugar cookies for your family or friends and watch how fast they go. Add this to my Recipe Box.

    • Preheat the oven to a temperature of 350 degrees F. Line a flat cookie sheet with parchment paper. This will help make removing cookies from the pan easier.

    • Put the butter in a small sauce pan and turn the burner on medium high. Let the butter melt completely. Then, continue to let it cook until the butter has a brown appearance. Take off the burner and let cool.

    • Pack the brown sugar into a 2 cup measuring cup or into 2-1 cup measuring cups. Dump into a large bowl and pour the cooled, melted butter over the brown sugar. Use an electric mixer to blend the butter and brown sugar together.

    • Add the egg and vanilla extract to the brown sugar mixture and cream together. Next, combine the flour, salt and baking powder in a small bowl and use a spoon to mix together. Add small amounts of the flour to the brown sugar mixture, stirring after each addition until all the flour is completely incorporated.

    • Get a small bowl and put the colored sugar in it. This is to roll the cookie balls in for decoration. You can also just use white granulated sugar for this step.

    • Take the cookie dough and roll into 2 inch balls. Roll the balls into the bowl of colored sugar, coating entirely. Place each ball on the parchment lined cookie sheet, about 2 inches apart. Either use your fingers or the bottom of a glass to flatten the cookie balls slightly.

    • Place the brown sugar cookies in the oven and let bake for 14 minutes. Take them out even if the top is cracked open in places and they look a little raw. Let sit about 5 minutes to cool off and then eat them.

    • In a small bowl, stir sugar and milk until smooth. Beat in corn syrup and almond (or vanilla) extract. You may need to adjust the quantities of milk or corn syrup slightly to get the consistency you want. Add slowly until it is just right.

    • Divide the icing into separate bowls. Add food coloring to each bowl until it has reached your desired shade.

    • Dip the cookies in the icing, or use a brush to paint it on. Painting is especially good to do detailing, like adding a carrot nose to a snowman, or making a beautiful butterfly cookie!

Suffering from an egg allergy or cutting back on sources of cholesterol doesn't have to mean going without cookies. For that matter, you can use an egg-free recipe for pecan-filled cookies that doesn't call for baking powder, either. These vegan cookies are great for those with allergic reactions to eggs. Add this to my Recipe Box.

    • Soften but don't melt the butter or margarine in the microwave using a microwave-safe bowl. Add the sugar and beat until creamy. Add the vanilla and beat again. Because this is an egg-free recipe and can be made without any dairy products, these vegan cookies are great keepers and can be stored for weeks without spoiling.

    • Add the chopped pecans and crushed potato chips. Beat at medium speed for two minutes. Gradually add the flour and beat well. The dough will be thick, so you might want to mix them by hand or use a heavy-duty mixer.

    • Place well-rounded teaspoons of the dough on an ungreased cookie sheet, two inches apart. Use the bottom of a greased drinking glass, dipped in some more sugar to flatten each cookie to a quarter-inch thick. Re-dip the glass into the sugar after doing each cookie.

    • Bake in a 350-degree oven for 10 minutes. Remove the cookies from the pan and allow to cool on a plate or rack.

How to Make Sugar Cookies From Scratch

What stimulates nostalgia more than the tantalizing scent of something delicious baking in the oven? Most of us remember the taste of warm, freshly baked sugar cookies from our childhood. You can make your own tasty sugar cookies from scratch. An electric mixer simplifies and speeds up the process, unlike the marathon baking sessions of yesteryear. Make one or more batches of these sugar cookies for you and someone special. Cookies are one gift that rarely gets returned. Add this to my Recipe Box.

    • Beat the butter, using a mixer on medium-high speed. Add the sugar, eggs and vanilla. Reduce the mixer speed to medium-low and gradually beat in the rest of the ingredients. • Sprinkle flour onto a clean, dry and flat surface.

    • Place the dough on the floured surface, and divide it into two equal portions. Cover both portions with a layer of plastic wrap.

    • Roll the dough into 1-inch thick rectangles with a rolling pin. Remove the plastic wrap and discard it.

    • Dip a cookie cutter in flour and cut out your cookie shapes.

    • Place the shaped cookie dough on a parchment-lined baking sheet.

    • Add colored sugar crystals or sprinkles, if desired.

    • Chill the cookie dough for 20 minutes in the refrigerator while your oven preheats to 350 degrees F.

    • Remove the baking sheet from the refrigerator and bake the cookies in the preheated oven for 10 to 17 minutes. Take the baking sheet from the oven.

    • Allow the cookies to cool for five minutes on the baking sheet, then remove them with a spatula and place them on a cooling rack. The cookies will become firm as they cool.

    • Put the cooled cookies into a decorative cookie jar or tin. Depending upon the size of each cookie, this recipe should yield up to 70 sugar cookies.
